Muslims are encouraged to choose an Islamic name for their children, indeed it is usual for Muslim converts to select a new Islamic name for themselves. The meaning of the name is very important –
“Muslims must choose a name that has a righteous meaning, that will befit and bring blessings to the child throughout his or her life. It is reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “On the Day of Resurrection, you will be called by your names and by your fathers’ names, so give yourselves good names.” (Hadith Abu Dawud).”
Here’s a link to a site for Muslim Girl’s and Boy’s names.
Muslim full names are difficult to comprehend for us at first – they start with a given name, then “bin” (son of) (their father’s name), bin (their grandfather’s name), bin (their great grandfather’s name) al (family name)
For instance Laith bin Abbas bin Saqr bin Mohammed Al —————–. Family honour is all important in this society – everyone can work out your ancestry and know if your family’s reputation is good!
Today’s mosque can be found beside the old textile market next to the Creek in Dubai. It’s known as the “Iranian Mosque”.
Wishing all our Muslim friends “Ramadan Kareem”. May this Holy Month be a blessed one for you and your families.
