Marina’s Background

Marina Bruce is British, from the North of Scotland, a wife, mother and blogger.

Joining her husband Neil, Marina moved to Al Ain in 2009 from Scotland’s oil capital, Aberdeen and wasted no time exploring her new country.

Since  the Bruce’s purchased their first off road vehicle, Marina has steadily become more adventurous, experienced and highly respected in the desert off-road scene.  This is partly due to Marina continuing with her desert travels during Neil’s job rotation on Das Island.  Together however, they have clocked up over 100,000kms off road driving in the deserts of Al Ain, Liwa, Wahiba and also crossed the Umm As Sameem (Mother of All Worries) in their many travels to Oman,  Southern Oman and Salalah.

  • Marina  has been a marshal in the Abu Dhabi  Desert Challenge in 2011-2013,  accompanied film crews and journalists, and led countless expeditions and camping trips, long and short, and generally encouraging  new desert adventurers.
  • In 2011 Marina founded this blog –  The Desert Diva: Living life to the Full in the Empty Quarter –  which now  attracts over 5000 visitors a month.
  • In 2012 Marina co founded Oasis Offroad, an Al Ain based offroad club for novice and intermediate desert adventurers.
  • Marina  is now acknowledged as one of the leading expat desert explorers in the UAE.  Click here to check out her driving CV.
  • Marina is available for public speaking on Adventure Driving in the Emirates and Oman and can be contacted via the email below.

  1. Hi Marina,
Thanks so much for following my blog 🙂
I’m going to be popping back here to read a bunch of your posts…. looking forward to it!

  2. Hello Marina…

I just wanted to catch up and say “thank you. I appreciate your ‘follow’, knowing how many interesting and entertaining blogs out there.

Blogging since June 2013, my aim is to deliver an eclectic offering of posts, from my ‘point n shoot’ attempts at basic photography, to the sharing of my travel adventures over the decades, as well as day to day happenings here on our fruit farm in southern Turkey. I also add my observations on life and lighter-hearted stuff thrown in for good measure.

The blog has grown to some 1150 posts now; so if you are at a loose end one day, you’d be most welcomed to stay a while and have a trawl through. There are plenty of drop-down categories within the menu to help in said digging process. Saying that, if you have any comments, suggestions or concerns, feel free to let me know.

Thanks again and hope you have a great day…

  3. Nick Burns Cumming says:

Just been directed to your blog by Sheena T and I love it. I fell in love with the desert when I was out for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Looking forward to reading more, and perhaps meeting you next time I’m out there. Nick

    • Hi Nick,
thanks for following me, appreciate it!
Looking forward to meeting you on your next trip to the UAE – will I have to wait until the next F1 or are you into the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge too?
      all the best

  4. Wow..same planet..different world. I live for water and live in sand dunes…along the island sea of Lake Michigan USA. I also off road…through green forests and orchards. Wow. 🙂

  5. Asif Mahamood says:

    Dear Marina,
I’m a great fan of yours and thank you once again for all the valuable information added in your website.
I would like to ask you if you have any suggestions on a good compressor for vehicles? I faced some issues and could not start my chinese compressor (Camel brand which is common among desert drivers) yesterday. I was lucky to find a tyre shop nearby to fill up the tyres.

    • Marina Bruce says:

      Hi Asif
would you believe we are back to using chinese compressors. They are so cheap and we don’t expect them to last beyond 6 months, anything more and it is a bonus. If I were to buy a more expensive one then I would choose an ARB twin, but fixed to car, not portable. Good luck with your choice

  7. Hi. Planning to drive to oman from dubai. The car is not in my name. I understand i need an NOC from the owner. Do we need to attested or only simple sogned NOC

    • Marina Bruce says:

      Hello Kindra
I am sorry I do not know the answer to this. I think you need to check with the Oman Border Police (that they will let it out of the country) and the UAE customs (that they will let it into the UAE). Good luck!
