Is the Arabian Peninsula Really Safe? What My Clients Thought
After fifteen years of living across Oman, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia, the question I still hear most often is:
“Is the Arabian Peninsula safe for travellers?”
And the honest answer is yes – neighbourhood crime levels in Oman, Saudi Arabia and the UAE are among the lowest globally – but most people don’t know that yet.
That’s the starting point for this three-part series.
Today, I’d like you to meet my fictional couple, based on hundreds of real clients, James and Emily, whose worries reflect the real fears many first-time visitors have when considering a holiday in Oman or the UAE instead of Egypt or Turkey.
“We love the idea… but is it safe?”
James and Emily are in their early forties, with two children aged 7 and 12.
They enjoy culture, nature, quiet beaches, and gentle adventure – and were looking for a safe, warm winter sun destination.
They first looked at Egypt and Turkey.
Yet the more they researched, the more they realised:
- Egypt can feel busy and overwhelming
- Some resort areas are known for pushy shopkeepers
- They kept reading reports of petty crime
- They wanted somewhere calmer, cleaner, and more relaxed
Friends suggested Oman and Dubai – both widely regarded as some of the safest places to visit in the Middle East – but still they hesitated.
“Is it really safe for tourists?”
“What about the laws?”
“Is it like Egypt?”
“Could we drive there ourselves?”
These are incredibly common questions.
Not fear — just uncertainty.
The internet wasn’t helping
When they began researching safety in Oman and the UAE, they discovered the problem most travellers face:
every website and Facebook group says something different.
- One blog claimed women must cover completely.
- Another said shorts are fine.
- One forum insisted you need a guide to leave the city.
- Another recommended renting a car and exploring freely.
- Someone said “The Middle East is dangerous.”
- Another said “It’s the safest region I’ve ever visited.”
And of course, the biggest misconception:
The term “Middle East” mixes together countries that are NOTHING alike.
Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan, Oman, Saudi Arabia, UAE —
completely different experiences, safety levels, cultures, and laws.
No wonder people end up confused.
What they did know…
They wanted a destination that was:
- warm in winter
- clean and low-stress
- safe for British tourists
- culturally rich
- excellent for self-driving
- respectful and family friendly
What they didn’t know was that Oman, the UAE, and much of Saudi Arabia fit this description perfectly.
“Surely someone must actually know this area properly?”
After days of conflicting information, James finally said:
“There must be someone who actually knows the Arabian Peninsula – not just a big travel company, but someone real.”
And that’s where their story turns.
Because when they found me – a UK-based travel specialist who lived in Oman and the UAE for 15 years and still travels back regularly (three trips this year!) –
everything started to make sense.
A note about what I do – and why
When people first speak to me, I’m always honest:
I have no ambition to build a big company.
I’m happiest at my desk in Scotland, poring over Google Maps and designing thoughtful, genuinely bespoke itineraries for travellers who want to experience the real Arabian Peninsula – safely and confidently.
I’m a one-woman expert, not a faceless agency.
And that’s deliberate.
I’m not a generic tour operator. I actually lived there, for over 15 years. I still go back regularly to keep my knowledge up to date.
My work is about value, local knowledge, cultural understanding, and safety – not volume.
